Methyl Ethyl Ketone

Known as butanone and it is a colourless liquid ketone with a sharp, sweet odour reminiscent of butterscotch and acetone. MEK dissolves many substances and is used as a solvent in processes involving gums, resins, cellulose acetate and nitrocellulose coatings and in vinyl films. For this reason, it is used in the manufacture of plastics, textiles, in the production of paraffin wax and in household products such as lacquer, varnishes, paint removers, adhesives and as a cleaning agent.

MEK is used as a solvent of the erasable dye. It is also a precursor to Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide which is a common catalyst for some polymerisation reactions.

This is low boiling point  liquids  used  in  foam  formulation  to assist in attaining  densities  and  softness  not  obtainable  with  the  conventional  water – Isocyanate  blow  chemistry. They function  by  absorbing  heat  from  the  exothermic  reaction of the foam formation,  vaporizing  and  providing  additional  gases  useful in expanding  the  foam to  a  lower  density.
