Solvents are used as diluents in paint manufacture to adjust the curing properties and viscosity of the paint. They are volatile and do not become part of the paint film after curing. Solvents also control the rate of flow and application properties, and affect the stability of the paint while in liquid state.

Solvents have their main function as being a carrier or vehicle for the non volatile components of the paint. In cases were heavy oils (like linseed) are to be spread as in the case of oil based interior house paint, a thinner are required. Once the solvents evaporates the other none volatile films stick to the surface. However, the use of solvent is optional because water is the main diluents for water – borne paints.

Paint solvents include White Spirit, Ketones, alcohols, aliphatics, aromatics, petroleum distillate, esters and glycol esters.
